Randy Lucyk is right on target. He realizes the power of the phone.
I’ve had more phone systems than I care to count; both on-premise, cloud, and VoIp. I’m going to take this conversation in an opposite direction because my experience is different from whatever phone system a shop may have.
I’ve had what I believe to be the best phone system(s) in the world. Even with that, when…Read More
In my opinion, the $100K income espoused is contingent on a shop’s ability to provide the service writer with enough high-quality leads. Most aftermarket shops I’ve known don’t have enough high-quality leads.
My wife and I worked together to finish the shop floor with 2-part Floor Epoxy from Home Depot. It ran us about $450 to do 3K sq. ft. Here’s a link to what we used. It took us 3 of these kits.
In our experience, it lasts about 5 years then you have to touch up the areas that have ch…Read More
Thank you a bunch!!!
I’m checking it out right now.
I’ve looked off and on, for the same type of information on passenger vehicles and light trucks for more than 25 years and have yet to find it. If you find it, post your source here. Thanks for sharing.
Who remembers The Buggy Whip story about not changing with the times? The Buggy Whip lives!
We are a transmission repair specialty shop and do not do general auto repair so we handle things a bit differently. It’s my opinion that whoever writes the quote should sell the job. Customers like to talk to whom they perceive is involved in the job, be it the tech or the manager. We track it by how many estimates get written that don’t turn into invoices/repair orders. We run our…Read More
What Tom and Trevor say is correct. However, I’d like to put my 2-cents in.
As long as I worked IN the business at my shop, I didn’t have much time for anything except putting out fires. It was only after I hired a manager that was I able to work ON the business. I learned this after reading 3 of Michael Gerber’s books.
When I finally realized my job role was marketing and making th…Read More

Here’s a way to find the zip code +4 for any address.

I just designed myself a COVID-19 T-shirt because I have a suppressed immune system (low white blood cell count) and limited respiration capacity because I’m missing half of my left lung. 🙁 This is going to be printed both front and back. If you want the .ai file to send to the T-shirt shop, just let me know.
We need to be marketing our shops more than ever during the pandemic. Here’s a 100-page guide that I ran across that is the best I’ve read to date. Some of it is web-technical and may be over the heads of some, but it’s still good nonetheless.
The Inc. link is broken, but the other link says:
>”The law provides that applicants can request up to $10,000; however, it seems that the SBA may scale the advance based on the number of employees an applicant has. Based on reports, the SBA may provide $1,000 per employee for up to ten employees. However, SBA has not provided public guidance on how it will determine the amount of th…
Your link gives me a 404 page not found error.
Here’s a great webinar on taking great shop photos that was posted yesterday after the live webinar on YouTube.
Thanks, Natalie. That information is nowhere to be found on the SBA website. (At least I can’t find it.) Can you give me a link to that information, please? Thanks!
I’m sort of late to the party but I’ve been writing estimates and repair orders in QB for well over a decade. I don’t use any conventional shop management software other than QB & Google Calendar. To create a repair order in QB, you create a form template. Go to Lists>Templates. Double-click a template you want to redesign/create. I modified the invoice to be a repair order. I also…Read More
